Anzac Day pairs was a light hearted affair, with a break for Anzac biscuits and a chat

For the past 14 years Joyce has been responsible for the selling of secondhand books at the club. This started when the new club house was built. The proceeds helping to pay for small luxuries when the club was on a tight budget. In the early days the money collected help pay for the Christmas party. Joyce recons the overall amount over these 14 years would be $10,000.This is an amazing amount of money . Thank you Joyce for all your hard work.

The last weekend in April , 8 members travelled to PMq for the Pairs and Teams congress. Congratulations to Jamie and Fran for winning the overall event in the Pairs after the first session. They received a bottle of wine for their efforts. Thanks to the members for representing our club. North of Coffs, on the same weekend, Yamba held their pairs congress. Thanks you Berneice & Elaine Hulbert for attending.

The main news for April was the English Royal wedding of William and Kate, but the club had it's own 'special' wedding that month..

Trivia question for April: what actor died shortly after starring as the Joker in The Dark Knight?

On Monday, May the 2nd the club participated in the Bridge for Brains Research Challenge. Table fees and donations from both the members and the club came to $1000. The money raised will support Neuroscience Research Australia and assist in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. A recent report predicts that over 1.1 million Australians will have dementia by 2050. Thank you all for supporting this cause

With a high Australian dollar it is not surprising some members have been taking advantage of the good exchange rate and holidaying abroad.

Phil & Lesley Mason, have been to Europe and cruised the Danube from Budapest to Nuremberg. They also visited other European areas . Here is a photo of them in Dubrovnic, a place they loved

Helen and Mike Blewitt also sailed the Danube River but travelled the other way and started the cruise at Amsterdam travelling east to Budapest. They finished the holiday off with 4 days in Prague

Rudi & Leonie Brocker have just returned from their annual pilgrimage to Bali . They spent a month there . Here is a couple of their stories.

Don't have your children too late in life ;otherwise this happens!!

..We spent one night at a safari park, where we were surrounded by lions, rhinos, zebras and wild beasts. And that was just from the room and restaurant. In the park itself they had virtually all the animals that one finds in Africa in very nice and natural surroundings. We really enjoyed our two days there'

For the first time we met a couple who played bridge. So we had quite a few enjoyable games. The lady, Jill, was very keen to practice as she was due to play in a tournament on her return home. Sure enough she won the novice section of the Mandurah  WA. bridge club in an Australia wide comp at the end of May

Chis and Glen Birch visited the north Island of NZ. Here they both are at the Maori war canoe inside the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands NZ .Chris said.. ' Very picturesque place, reminds us of the Whitsunday's, only much colder of course'

Elaine & Frank Hulbert toured Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Here is Elaine's story

We travelled to Denmark and stood outside Fred and Mary`s house(Palace). They were at  home; I bet she wasn't’t  doing housework though! In Berlin we  saw the remains of the Wall and other landmarks like the Brandenburg Gates and Checkpoint Charlie. Poznan in Poland was the first of the cities with the Old Town and cobbled streets that impressed. Lithuania was followed by Latvia and Estonia, old Soviet states but now happily westernized. There were no border checks but Russia was very serious and tedious with bribery still a way of life on the border.  St Petersburg is special. We moved on to Finland and a scenic ferry trip through the thousand islands of the archipelago to Stockholm. A very different but enjoyable holiday. Below is a Lutheran church in Russia.

But it wasn't all about traveling overseas. Some members took off and and explored our own beautiful country.

Barbara and Jim Herring camped their way down to the south coast, across the bottom through Victoria, into SA and back home via Broken Hill.

Pat and Graham Haigh, took their new van on a similar trip; playing on as many golf courses as possible on the way.

Helen and Mike Blewitt, took the luxurious option and flew to some of the remote areas. Here they are in Birdsville

"We will have to think hard and deep next year,or get a bigger stick to beat them off with"

.....Tony Howes,Coffs Super Congress Director, in one of his E-mails to congress organisers. This was a quest to find some more room room in Opal Cove to fit in more tables. The teams event became a sell out mid June with a lot of disappointed players wanting to play in this popular congress

Congratulations to Ben and Magda, Club Championship winners for 2011 and to Kellie Potts and David Featherstone for coming second. Both received monetary prizes. Well done

On the weekend of the 15/16the May the club held our own annual Swiss Teams congress.Teams of four came from as far afield as Sydney, Armidale, Inverell, Tamworth and all points along the North Coast to compete for the prize money of $2000 and glory of becoming a winning team. With a reputation of holding a professional, fun filled congress it was not surprising that the congress had sold out six weeks beforehand with a waiting list for cancellations . Click here to see the full results . Click here to see the photos of the winners

Their were some local successes;local girls Celma Coupe, Lynette Coupe, Dulcie Pitman and Pat Tiernan took out the prize money for winning the Intermediate section.

Winners are grinners, from left to right, Celma Coupe, Dulcie Pitman, Lyn Coupe and Pat Tiernan

Runner up in the Restricted section, John Courcier, Christine Courcier, Piara Atwal (Jo Moran missing from the photo)

The congress was a great success and special thanks must be given to our Vice President, Robin Irwin who had her finger on the pulse at all times making sure everything ran smoothly

The winners of the Australia Wide Australia Novice Pairs, which took place on May 27 were Kellie Potts & Joanne Moran. Congratulations.

May's GNP winners were Eve Colley & Elaine Rae. Well done.

The main news for May was the death of Bin Laden. May 2 will be etched in our memories along with John Keddendy's assignation, the death of Princess Di, the bombing of the Twin Towers . We will always remembers 'what I was doing the time I heard the news of Bin Laden's death' .

Trivia question for May: what animal-linked word describes someone who always gets blamed?

The GNOT event took place, three Sundays in June. Congratulations to Libby Power, Marion Mostyn, Liz Martin, Jane Leach & Gill Cooper who came first and to Ben, Magda, Al Raam and Ian Doland who were runner up. Both these teams will represent the club in the Regional Final later in the year

It was good to get an E-mail from Isabel Wallace. She is happy with her move to Melbourne, here is her latest news (click here)

GNP winners for June were Bill Zimmerman & Graham Stubington. Well done. The regional finals take place on 4 September in Camden Haven.

Cliff called a directors meeting just recently and there was a discussion on 'slow play' and how to deal with it if you are director of the day . The director of the day will encourage players to 'keep to the clock'; if still bidding at the '3 minute bell' then the hand will be deemed not played or you can play it at the end.

We welcome 2 new members to our club. Jane Leach from Victoria has recently moved to Coffs and Sue Mcgrilvray. Sue has reinstated her membership with our club after a few years away. We welcome you both .

Cliff and Jackie have been giving beginners lessons on Monday night. At the moment we have 14 budding bridge players in the making. Thank you Cliff and Jackie for giving up your time to do this

For many tennis fans , June means Wimbledon..

It was great to see our own Bernard Tomic representing Australia . He made it to the quarter finals and at 18 years of age this is an outstanding effort. Let's hope we see much more of him in the future

Trivia Question for June : who was the most recent Australian to win the men's singles title in Wimbledon

I have just clicked onto to the Super Congress link on the web page .As I finish off this new members corner I reflect on how this congress has become so popular that the teams event was a sell out mid June. In order to to avoid disappointment the Super Congress committee has, in conjunction with Opal Cove, released more tables, but the more tables that become available the quicker they are taken. So for all you members, it's official the Coffs Harbour Bridge Club is the best Bridge Club in the world. With a a reputation for being professional and friendly we cannot keep bridge players away from this congress. It started in 2004 with just 50 tables to now 116 with a wait list and still 7 weeks to go. WOW!
