Anniversary Teams took place on Monday, August 1. This year members created their own teams for the event which proved popular .There was a huge turnout of members making up 23 tables. The event was split into 2 sections. The Winners of Section 1 were: Lex Windows, Tom Free, Francis Gaunt & Jamie McFall congrats. In Section 2 the winners were: Magda, Ben & Mandy Johnson & Ian Doland. Prize money was awarded to the winners. It was nice to see members from Nambucca Bridge Club enjoying the afternoon. There was a break for afternoon tea where players mingled; talking, drinking and eating cake. Thanks to the organisers of the event especially Cliff. It was the first time Bridgemates has had to deal with a teams event and it all went very smoothly.
Congratulations to :Tom & Lex ( Fran Gaunt & Jamie McFall missing from photo) and Ben, Magda, & Mandy ( Ian Doland missing from photo); winners of the Anniversary Teams for 2011

The Super Congress was a huge success; the event a sell out months beforehand. To try and avoid disappointed players more room was found and a record 116 teams played. This was broken down into Open & Restricted Pairs and Teams. Click here for the full results. Some locals did well. Chris Birch and Barbara Herring came third in the Restricted Section of the Pairs. The team of Nigel McIvor, Kellie Potts, Michele Tredinick & Matt Blackham came runner up in the below 1000 Mps.The team of Mike Siford, Patricia Amunsden,Colin Tolley & Barbara Herring came 2nd in the Restricted Teams. The team of Meg & David Featherstone,Christine Atwal & Pauline Griffin came 4th in the Restricted Section. Well done to you all. Click here to see the photos. At the Directors Forum held by Laurie Kelso, Tony Howes & Sean Mullumphy during the Super Congress week several important ruling were discussed. Two of them, I thought, often come up in our own club.
- Q. When is a card deemed to be played? A. For Defender: if partner could have seen it. For Declarer: If it is face up on or near the table. The fact that defender may have seen it is irrelevant.
- Q. When to correct misinformation. A. For Declarer:at the end of the auction. For Defender:At the end of play
Congratulations to Kellie Potts who has just passed her Directors Exam.
Long time member Margaret Smith died recently. Our sympathies are with her husband Arthur and their family. Margaret and Arthur have been playing at the club for many years and their partnership will be missed. It is good to see Arthur back at the club.
There was another Big Birthday just recently. Judith Carpenter celebrated her 80th Birthday. Here is a photo of Judith with some familiar faces ( and all of them, apart from one, are octogenarians) having a celebratory lunch.

Congratulations Judy from us all at the club.
There was workshop held during the Super Congress week ran by David Beauchamp & Sartaj Hans. The topic was Defensive Play. Many Hand were analysed. There was discussion on when to cover an honour and this was what they came up with; cover if you see one honour on your right and two on your left". Interesting!
Magda gave me this joke. I am not sure if it is funny or not!! but it will sure make you smile Click here
As I finish off this members corner I have been looking back at the last three months. Winter has been depressing this year. The weather colder than normal and the news dominated by the Carbon Tax,Asylum Seekers, job losses and the volatility of the stock market. However, two events stand out for me. The first was watching Cadel Evans win the Tour de France for 2011, the first Australian ever to do so. The second was Sam Stosur winning the Ladies US Open Tennis Championships. Didn't it make you feel proud to me Australian! The weather is now warmer and summer just around the corner. On Tuesday night, 25 October there is a Pizza & Wine night. These are always fun and good crowd guaranteed. Listen out for announcements. The first three Mondays in November is the President's Plate. This event has 3 sections( flights) based on masterpoints. Again listen for announcements. On Monday, 5 December is the AGM and the Christmas Party on Friday the 9th.

The next Members Corner goes on line in January, so from me have a great Christmas and if you are on the roads this festive season please travel safely.
