Spotlight on Jess Miller:jess

Our own Jess made headlines on the television news and in the papers early in October.
At the age of 90, Jess won her place in the record books as being one of the oldest
golfers in Australia to hit a hole in one on the golf course. A few days ago on the NBN television
news Jess was considered as one of the highest achievers for 2011.
Jessie achieved this at the local golf club where she has been a regular player for the last 62 years.
Jessie, you are not only a brilliant golfer but a brilliant bridge player as well.
You are an inspiration to us all and we are proud to have you in our club.

The Presidents plate was played the first three Mondays in November. The format is in three sections ;the 'flights' based on the number of combined masterpoints of the pair playing. Overall winners were Cath Rich and Brian Doust. Congratulations

The winners of flight A were: Meg & David Featherstone; Flight B:Chris Birch & Tom Free and Flight C:Lesley & Phil Mason. Well done. The winners were awarded with plates which they will keep for the year.

Several members travelled to Armidale on the 26-27 November to play in the Swiss Pairs and Swiss Teams Congress. These are always fun weekends at the bridge table and also on the social front. There were many successes. Magda & Ben came 1st in the Pairs and Pauly & Robyn came 4th. In the teams: Colin ,Mike Siford, Pauly & Robyn came 2nd; Ben, Magda, Kellie & Nigel came 5th and Jamie, Fran, Margaret & Robert came 6th. Well done to all of you. On the Saturday night we ate at one of the local Thai Restaurants.

It was the AGM on December 5th. There were a few changes this year. Our President, Helen stood down and was replaced by Robin Irwin. We will miss Helen but feel reassured that our club is in good hands with Robin and the rest of the committee. We farewell Wendy as the secretary and Pauly, who has looked after the kitchen and associate buying so splendidly over the last few years. John Courcier also stood down. Judy Thompson, Jamie Mc Fall, Debbie McGuiness & David Alexander are joining the committee and we look forward to their input. Helen still stays on as past immediate President. Robyn Bingham was awarded Life member. Robyn has worked tirelessly over the last 10 as her role as Senior Director and acting (occasionally) Senior Director last year. Thank you Robyn on behalf of the members, your hard work has not gone unnoticed. Click here for the new committee and the roles they will play.

Here is a slideshow of photos taken at the AGM. Thank you David Alexander for taking the photographs. Three committee members are missing from the new Committee photo, they are Cliff Mitchell, Debbie McGuiness & Jamie McFall. The other photos are of members receiving flowers and trophies. Preceding the AGM the Super Congress AGM took place. In his report, Phil pointed out that numbers had increased 300% since the inaugural Congress in 2004. $3000 of the profits made was donated to the Lions Club which will help fund the restoration and transformation of the "dementia safe" courtyard at the Base hospital.

The Christmas Party took place on Friday 9th December. Everyone, as always enjoyed themselves and thanks to the committee for organising it. There were various prizes throughout the morning and lunch was as scrumptious as always. Thanks to David Alexander for taking the photos Christmas Party Photos

So what's around the corner.

Going through the calendar, we have Australia Day Pairs on Wednesday, January 25.This will be a fun day with a 'cake' break. February we have the David Beauchamp's workshop on the weekend of the 11-12February (more details on this on the notice board, it is also essential that you put your name on the list). In March there is the combined Championships: the George Vermont Restricted and the Isabel Wallace Intermediate. The month ends with the popular Wine & Pizza night on Tuesday, 27th.

We are now into a brand new year and, I am sure various resolutions have been made, whatever yours is, I hope you all keep on enjoying life. The year has started well, the weather is warm and sunny. Lets hope 2012 is a good year with much world peace.

I saw this on a teatowel over over the holiday period and loved it.
