Members Corner Edition #5

Back to the Members Corner

It's always a wonderful occasion when members get together and represent Coffs Harbour Bridge Club in an 'away 'congress. It's also a great thrill when one or more teams gets into the top quarter of the pack, so to speak. This happened on two occasions just recently.Ivan Redwood, Cliff Michell, Ivan Bride and Brian Doust traveled to Ballina to represent the CHBC in the Novice Teams. They came third and for the first congress away from home this was a terrific fete.

Then on a weekend late November, 12 players represented the CHBC in the Armidale Congress . Phil and Bambi Houlton came 6th in the pairs, they were ranked 27 out of the 54 pairs. In the teams event the Rogers team, consisting of Shirley Rogers, Elaine Rae, Barbara Herring & Elaine Hulbert came =4. They had been ranked 17 out of 28. The Houlton team consisting of Phil & Bambi Houlton, Liz Quinn & Jenny Strickland came 6th and were ranked 18th. It was a wonderful weekend away from home.

For 3 Mondays in November the Club is busy organising the Presidents Plate. The room is divided into 3 sections known as "flights". The flight the pair is in, is ranked by the number of combined Master points they have. This year the winners were Judith Carpenter & Marion Mostyn for Flight A, Christine Atwal & Pauly Griffin for Flight B and ivan Bride and Ivan Redwood for Flight C. Congratulations to these players

At the end of the last session there was the Presidents Cocktail Party. Photos

The members of the CHBC were saddened with the news that Allen Hogbin had died on 23 November 2007. Allen had been a bridge player at the club for many years and he was always willing to give his expert advice to the club when it was asked for. Our condolences go to his wife Barbara, also a bridge player, and their 6 sons and daughters

On Friday the 14th of December the club held it's annual Christmas party. This is always a popular event;the pairs are randomly drawn. The bidding and play can be quite exciting at times to say the least. Throughout the morning there were several raffles and books, booze, christmas puddings and hams were taken home by quite a few players. At the end of the session there was the usual party fare and prize giving. A thanks must be given to Robyn and other committee members who helped in the organisation. Photos

Hot off the press!

Its official: the Coffs Coast Super Congress, which is held in August, has been awarded gold points. This is an outstanding achievement for a congress which has been only going 4 years. It can now only get bigger and better. click here

The Saturday before Christmas the club held an impromptu afternoon tea to celebrate the last game before Christmas. Photos

Bridge Puzzle #2

At a Swiss Teams match, the contract at one table was four spades doubled, which was made exactly. The same contract was reached at the other table, but it was not doubled. Amazingly, the board was a 'push'(draw)! How was this possible ?

As I finish off this members corner edition number 5 ,2008 has well and truly started. Christmas decorations are coming down, families and friends have departed and life for most people is getting back to normal. At the CHBC the brochure is underway for the Super Congress; with the gold points now awarded this is a very exciting time. On the congress front, the Canberra Summer Festival of Bridge starts mid January and the popular Gold Coast Congress towards the end of February. Members from the CHBC will be attending both and we wish all our participants all the very best.

Socially the club is holding the Australia Day Pairs on Australia Day and a New Year Barbeque on Sunday 10 February .

It has just come to my notice that it is an early Easter this year; so it will be well and truly over by the time the next members corner goes on line ( early April)...so dare I say this...

If any one wants any of the photos in this edition please email me , letting me know the category it's in and the jpeg number and I will gladly send it to you. Until April...
